What is the Sick Leave Act?

The Sick Leave Act 2022 gives all employees in Ireland the legal right to paid sick leave—starting with 5 days per year in 2024—ensuring fair treatment and income protection during short-term illness

What Are Sick Leave Rights in the Workplace


Under the Sick Leave Act 2022, all employees in Ireland are entitled to statutory sick pay. As of 1 January 2024, this includes:


  • 5 days of paid sick leave per year (increased from 3 days in 2023),
  • Paid at 70% of the employee’s normal daily wage, up to a maximum of €110 per day,
  • Available to employees who have worked at least 13 continuous weeks with their employer,
  • Requires a medical certificate from day one of absence.


This statutory entitlement applies to full-time, part-time, agency workers, apprentices, and those on probation or training.
