Bullying, Harassment and Sexual Harassment
Creating Safer, Respectful, and Legally Compliant Workplaces
What is Bullying, Harassment & Sexual Harassment
In the Irish workplace context, these terms are defined under the Employment Equality Acts, the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, and the WRC/HSA Joint Code of Practice:
- Bullying: Repeated inappropriate behaviour, direct or indirect, verbal, physical or otherwise, conducted by one or more persons against another at the place of work and/or in the course of employment.
- Harassment: Unwanted conduct related to any of the nine protected grounds under equality legislation, which has the purpose or effect of violating a person’s dignity.
- Sexual Harassment: Any form of unwanted verbal, non-verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment.
These behaviours are not only damaging—they are illegal. Every employer in Ireland has a legal duty of care to prevent and address them.
